Winter thulostoma (Tulostoma brumale) is a fungus belonging to the Tulostoma family.

The shape of young fruiting bodies of winter twigs is hemispherical or spherical. Ripe mushrooms are characterized by a well-developed stem, the same hat (sometimes slightly flattened from below). The mushroom has a miniature size, very similar to a small mace. It grows mainly in the southern regions, where a temperate, warm climate prevails. In the early stages of development, the fruiting bodies of this mushroom species grow underground. They are characterized by a whitish-ocher color, and range from 3 to 6 mm in diameter. Gradually, a thin, woody leg appears on the surface of the soil. Its color can be described as ocher brown. It has a cylindrical shape and a tuberous base. The diameter of the leg of this mushroom is 2-4 mm, and its length can reach 2-5 cm. At the very top, a ball of brown or ocher color is visible on it, which acts as a hat. In the very center of the ball is a tubular mouth, surrounded by a brown area.

Mushroom spores are yellowish or ocher-reddish in color, spherical in shape, and their surface is uneven, covered with warts.

Prefers to grow on limestone soils. The formation of fruiting bodies occurs from August to September, the fungus belongs to the category of humus saportrophs. It grows mainly in steppes and deciduous forests, on humus and sandy soils. It is rare to meet the fruiting bodies of winter tustolomas, mainly in groups.

The mushroom of the described species is widely distributed in Asia, Western Europe, Africa, Australia, and North America. There is a winter twig in Our Country, more precisely, in its European part (Siberia, the North Caucasus), as well as in some areas of the Voronezh region (Novokhopersky, Verkhnekhavsky, Kantemirovsky).

Winter twig is an inedible mushroom.

Ảnh và mô tả về Tulostoma Winter (Tulostoma brumale)The winter twig (Tulostoma brumale) is similar in appearance to another inedible mushroom called the tulostoma scaly. The latter is distinguished by the larger size of the stem, which is still characterized by a rich brown color. Exfoliating scales are clearly visible on the surface of the mushroom stem.

Winter thulostoma mushroom is not included in the list of protected species, however, in some areas it is still taken under protection. Mycologists give some recommendations for the preservation of the described species of fungi in natural habitats:

– In the existing habitats of the species, the protection regime should be observed.

– It is necessary to constantly search for new places of growth of winter twigs and be sure to properly organize their protection.

— It is necessary to monitor the status of known populations of this fungal species.
