Yoga is not just a form of gymnastics. This is a whole philosophy that helps to understand yourself. The Guardian readers shared their stories of how yoga literally brought them back to life.

Vernon, 50: “After six months of yoga, I gave up alcohol and tobacco. I don’t need them anymore.»

I drank every day and smoked a lot. He lived for the sake of the weekend, was constantly depressed, and also tried to cope with shopaholism and drug addiction. This was ten years ago. I was forty then.

After the first lesson, which took place in a regular gym, everything changed. Six months later I quit drinking and smoking. Those close to me said that I look happier, friendlier, that I have become more open and attentive to them. Relations with his wife also improved. We used to constantly quarrel over little things, but now they have stopped.

Perhaps the most important thing was that I quit smoking. I tried to do this for many years without success. Yoga helped to understand that addiction to tobacco and booze was just an attempt to feel happy. When I learned to find the source of happiness within myself, I realized that doping is no longer needed. A few days after giving up cigarettes, I felt bad, but it passed. Now I practice every day.

Yoga isn’t necessarily going to change your life, but it can be an impetus for change. I was ready for change and it happened.

Emily, 17: “I had anorexia. Yoga has helped to build a relationship with the body»

I had anorexia, and I tried to commit suicide, and not for the first time. I was in a terrible state — I lost half the weight. Thoughts of suicide were constantly haunted, and even psychotherapy sessions did not help. It was a year ago.

The changes started from the very first session. Due to illness, I ended up in the weakest group. At first, I couldn’t get past the basic stretching exercises.

I have always been flexible because I did ballet. Maybe that’s what caused my eating disorder. But yoga helped to understand that it is important not only to look good, but also to feel like the mistress of your body. I feel strength, I can stand on my hands for a long time, and this inspires me.

Yoga teaches you to relax. And when you calm down, the body heals

Today I live a more fulfilling life. And although I did not fully recover after what happened to me, my psyche became more stable. I can keep in touch, make friends. I will go to university in the fall. I didn’t think I could do it. Doctors told my parents that I would not live to be 16.

I used to worry about everything. Yoga gave me a sense of clarity and helped me put my life in order. I am not one of those people who do everything methodically and consistently, doing yoga only 10 minutes a day. But she helped me gain confidence. I learned to calm myself down and not panic about every problem.

Che, 45: “Yoga got rid of sleepless nights”

I suffered from insomnia for two years. Sleep problems began amid illness and stress due to moving and divorce of parents. My mother and I moved to Canada from Guyana. When I visited relatives who stayed there, I was diagnosed with osteomyelitis — inflammation of the bone marrow. I was on the verge of life and death, I could not walk. The hospital wanted to amputate my leg, but my mother, a nurse by training, refused and insisted on returning to Canada. The doctors assured me that I would not survive the flight, but my mother believed that they would help me there.

I had several surgeries in Toronto, after which I felt better. I was forced to walk with braces, but kept both legs. I was told that the lameness would last a lifetime. But I was still glad to be alive. Because of the anxiety, I started having trouble sleeping. To cope with them, I took up yoga.

At that time it was not as common as it is now. I worked out alone or with a trainer who rented a basement from a local church. I began to read literature on yoga, changed several teachers. My sleep problems are gone. After graduating from university, she went to work in a research center. My insomnia returned and I tried meditation.

I have developed a special yoga program for nurses. It became successful, introduced in several hospitals, and I focused on teaching.

The main thing to understand about yoga is that it teaches you to relax. And when you calm down, the body heals.
